UAE to pull forces out of Yemen after calls for withdrawal, Saudi strike

 The United Arab Emirates has announced the withdrawal of its forces from Yemen, declaring an end to what it called “counterterrorism” operations there, after Saudi Arabia accused Abu Dhabi of supporting separatists in Yemen.

The announcement on Tuesday came after Yemen’s internationally recognised government demanded the UAE pull its forces from the country within 24 hours, a call backed by Saudi Arabia.

Hours earlier, Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces also attacked the southern Yemeni port of Mukalla, targeting what Riyadh said was a UAE-linked weapons shipment destined for the separatist Southern Transition Council (STC) in Yemen.

The STC, which initially supported Yemen’s internationally recognised government against the Houthi rebels, launched an offensive against the Saudi Arabia-backed government troops this month, seeking an independent state in the south.

The advance broke years of deadlock, with the STC ‌seizing control of broad swaths of southern Yemen, including the Hadramout and Mahara provinces, in defiance of warnings from Riyadh. Hadramout borders Saudi Arabia, and Mahara is close to the border.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday said it was disappointed about “pressure exerted by the UAE” on the STC to conduct military operations in the Hadramout and Mahara provinces. Riyadh said it considered the moves a threat to its national security.

“In this context, the kingdom stresses that any threat to its national security is a red line, and the Kingdom will not hesitate to take all necessary steps and measures to confront and neutralise any such threat,” it said.

Following Tuesday’s rapid-fire events, the UAE’s Ministry of Defence said it carried out a “comprehensive assessment” of its role in Yemen and decided to end its mission there.

“In light of recent developments and their potential implications for the safety and effectiveness of counterterrorism missions, the Ministry of Defence announces the termination of the remaining counterterrorism personnel in Yemen of its own volition, in a manner that ensures the safety of its personnel,” the UAE statement said.

The UAE announcement came amid efforts to tamp down tensions that have erupted in recent days.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it welcomed the Saudi Arabian and UAE statements, which it said reflected a “commitment to prioritising the interests of the region, strengthening the principles of good neighbourliness, and adhering to the foundations and principles upon which the GCC Charter is based.”

The Gulf Cooperation Council consists of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and the UAE.

Meanwhile, Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud held telephone conversations with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, discussing “regional developments”.
Tensions over the STC

The Saudi Arabia-led coalition’s strike on Yemen’s Mukalla revealed widening tensions within a coalition built in 2015 to combat the Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen.

Emirati troops first arrived in Yemen as part of the Saudi Arabia-led coalition that year, but the UAE pulled most of its forces out in 2019, leaving only a limited number in the government-run south.

Following the Mukalla strike, which did not cause casualties, Rashad al-Alimi, the head of Yemen’s Saudi Arabia-backed presidential council, dissolved a defence pact with the UAE and gave Emirati forces 24 hours to leave.

In a televised speech, al-Alimi said it had been “definitively confirmed ‌that the UAE pressured and directed the STC to undermine and rebel against the authority of the state through military escalation”, according to the Yemeni state news agency.

Saudi Arabia backed al-Alimi’s call for the UAE to withdraw its forces from Yemeni territory, and asked that it halt “any military or financial support to any party” in the country.

The UAE said it had been surprised by the Saudi Arabian air strike, and that the shipments in question did not contain weapons and were destined for the Emirati forces, rather than the STC.

It also said that it was committed to ensuring the security of Saudi Arabia and that it was seeking a solution “that prevents escalation, based on reliable facts and existing coordination”.

Yemeni state television showed what it said was black smoke rising from the port in the early morning, with burned vehicles. Al-Alimi declared a no-fly zone, and a sea and ground blockade on all ports and crossings for 72 hours.

Ex MLA Kuldeep Sengar To Stay In Jail, Supreme Court Stays Bail In Unnao Case

 The Supreme Court has stayed a Delhi High Court order suspending ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar's life term for the rape of a woman – then a minor – in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao in 2017.

The court acknowledged a responsibility to the survivor and issued notice to the ex-Bharatiya Janata Party leader based on a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation – the lead investigating and prosecution agency – challenging the High Court order. Sengar was given four weeks to respond.

The court noted drily that there is no question of compromise personal liberty; Kuldeep Sengar remains in jail for now, serving a concurrent sentence over the custodial death of the woman's father.

A vacation bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant and including Justices JK Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih also allowed the Unnao rape survivor to intervene with her petition.

Ahead of today's hearing the survivor said she had faith in the Supreme Court and appealed to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure the safety of her family and herself.

She claimed Sengar had bribed officials, including the Investigating Officer and an unnamed Delhi High Court judge, and said her family had already suffered severely since Sengar was given bail.

The 2017 Unnao rape case made headlines this week after Sengar – then representing the Bangarmau seat – had his sentence suspended and was granted bail pending an appeal against the trial court's verdict. In a controversial order, the High Court reasoned his MLA status did not justify the lower court considering him a 'public servant'. The bench of Justice Subramonium Prasad and Justice Harish Vaidyanathan also said anti-child sexual offences law POCSO could not be applied in this case.

And, having dismissed Sengar as a 'public servant', the High Court said the seven-and-a-half years served so far is "more than minimum number" prescribed by law in this case.

As a result Kuldeep Sengar was released on conditional bail; the conditions include a Rs 15 lakh personal bond, a promise not to leave Delhi or come within five kilometres of the survivor.

The release order was widely condemned while shocking scenes from Delhi – where the survivor and her mother were bullied and intimidated by central security forces while trying to protest – added to the tension and anger that has erupted over the past week.

His release led to clashes in Delhi Tuesday and Wednesday between central forces tasked with 'guarding' the survivor and members of her family, including frightening visuals of her mother seemingly forced to jump from a moving bus that then drove off with her daughter on board.

Speaking to reporters after the outrageous incident, the mother broke down and said, "We did not get justice. My daughter has been held captive. It seems they want to kill us."

India's Forex Reserves Surge $4.36 Billion To $693 Billion, Gold Holding Rises $2.6 Billion

India’s foreign exchange (forex) reserves surged $4.368 billion to $693.318 billion during the week ended December 19, according to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The value of the gold reserves jumped $2.623 billion to $110.365 billion during the week.

The overall kitty had increased by $1.689 billion to $688.949 billion in the previous week.

For the week ended December 19, foreign currency assets, a major component of the reserves, increased by $1.641 billion to $559.428 billion, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s latest ‘Weekly Statistical Supplement’ data.

Expressed in dollar terms, the foreign currency assets include the effects of appreciation or depreciation of non-US units, such as the euro, pound, and yen, held in the foreign exchange reserves.

The special drawing rights (SDRs) were up by $8 million to $18.744 billion.

India’s reserve position with the IMF was up by $95 million to $4.782 billion in the week, according to the RBI data.

The price of the safe-haven asset gold has been on a sharp uptrend over recent months, perhaps amid heightened global uncertainties and robust investment demand.

After the last monetary policy review meeting, the RBI had said that the country’s foreign exchange reserves were sufficient to cover more than 11 months of merchandise imports. Overall, India’s external sector remains resilient, and the RBI is confident it can comfortably meet external financing requirements.

In 2023, India added around $58 billion to its foreign exchange reserves, contrasting with a cumulative decline of $71 billion in 2022. In 2024, reserves rose by just over $20 billion. So far in 2025, the forex kitty has increased by about $47-48 billion, according to data.

Foreign exchange reserves, or FX reserves, are assets held by a nation’s central bank or monetary authority, primarily in reserve currencies such as the US dollar, with smaller portions in the Euro, Japanese Yen, and Pound Sterling.

DH Interview | ‘National treasures should be under govt care’: H K Patil on conserving Karnataka's prehistoric sites

With over 90 per cent of Karnataka’s prehistoric sites in a dilapidated condition, what efforts are underway to protect them?

It was only after I took charge as Tourism Minister that prominence was given to prehistoric sites in Karnataka. After visiting the Hire Benakal megalithic site in Koppal, I ensured the provision of basic facilities and protection. I also made sure that information about the significance of the site reached lawmakers, officials and enthusiasts through an exhibition at the Vidhana Soudha. Similar efforts will be undertaken for all prehistoric sites in the state.

The state government has announced excavation plans at Lakkundi, Rajaghatta and other prehistoric sites, but no visible progress has been made…

The excavation work at multiple prehistoric sites is on. At Lakkundi, the department has called for tender and work will commence soon. Due to the monsoon, we could not take up the excavation as rules do not permit us. I will ensure that research work at all the major sites, for which permission has been given, is completed at the earliest, so that conservation work can follow.

Researchers say obtaining excavation permissions in Karnataka is difficult due to long delays and red tape. How do you respond?

The state does not permit individual researchers to carry out excavations independently, as there have been cases of some individuals making away with some important artefacts. All excavation work must be coordinated with the Department. While we are open to collaborating with researchers and granting them access for study, obtaining permissions from the ASI in Delhi has become challenging, even for state-sponsored projects.   

Are there efforts to preserve prehistoric artefacts scientifically, given that many are currently held by private individuals?

Due to the lack of quality museums, many artefacts are being stored in universities and research centres. It is preferable to preserve them scientifically in private spaces than to leave them in government godowns. Ballari has one private museum. The government will take steps to set up similar museums if the Ballari museum model is feasible. Ultimately, our national treasures should be under government care.

160-Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Tracks Discovered In Chile’s Atacama Desert

Newly discovered dinosaur footprints in northern Chile are offering scientists a rare window into a world that existed 160 million years ago, when the region’s arid landscape pulsed with cycles of water and life. The find, published in the Swiss Journal of Palaeontology, includes the smallest known theropod tracks ever recorded in Chile, and possibly along the entire western edge of Gondwana.

Traces Of Life In A Desert Long Gone

The fossilized footprints were unearthed in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth today. But according to the researchers, it wasn’t always so barren.

“Around 160 million years ago, northern Chile experienced cycles of flooding and drought,” the researchers explained. “While the climate was largely dry, seasonal water accumulation created ephemeral wetlands that attracted animals of all sizes — from small theropods to massive carnivorous dinosaurs.”

These wetlands, scattered across an ancient desert basin, would have provided temporary oases for dinosaurs roaming through the harsh Jurassic environment. As these animals crossed muddy patches near water sources, they left behind traces of their passage delicate impressions that, against all odds, endured through deep time.

A Moment Frozen In Mud

The preservation of these tracks is a story of chance and timing. “As dinosaurs walked across damp mud near these water sources, their footprints were imprinted in the soft sediment,” the scientists noted. “Subsequent flooding gently covered the tracks, preserving them for millions of years.”

The team identified nine footprints, likely from small theropod dinosaurs, arranged in a line that could indicate a single trackway. Although the impressions are faint and fragmented, they retain enough detail for scientists to reconstruct part of the animals’ behavior and environment. The Smallest Theropods Ever Found In Chile

“These footprints constitute the smallest theropod tracks recorded so far in Chile, and possibly across the entire western margin of Gondwana,” the scientists said. The discovery pushes back the known range of small theropods in the region and suggests a more diverse Jurassic ecosystem than previously thought.

The tracks, though poorly preserved, provide invaluable data. “Due to their poor preservation state, quantitative measurements could not be obtained,” the authors said. “Nevertheless, analysis of the digital model enables the inference of the presence of at least 9 footprints that show an alignment which could correspond to a possible trackway.”

The team believes these small dinosaurs could have been juvenile predators or diminutive species adapted to arid, fluctuating conditions. The faint impressions offer a whisper of their movement through a prehistoric landscape that has since turned to stone.

Reconstructing A Lost World

Through sediment analysis and 3D modeling, the researchers reconstructed how the Jurassic ecosystem of northern Chile may have functioned. Seasonal water cycles would have shaped the movements of fauna, concentrating life around temporary ponds and streams. The tracks are evidence of dynamic ecological interactions in what is now a lifeless expanse of sand and salt flats.

By situating these fossils within broader geological data, scientists are piecing together a timeline of changing climates that may have influenced dinosaur evolution across the southern continents. The Swiss Journal of Palaeontology study provides an essential step toward mapping how ancient species responded to extreme environmental variability, a topic that resonates strongly in modern paleoclimatology.
